I can't believe, in just a few days, Hudson will be celebrating his first birthday. I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when the call came in that his mama was in labor! Since Hudson was my 2nd ever birth to photograph, this day is special to me as well. I have been so lucky to have photographed this little guy his first year and I cannot wait to see what year #2 brings! We are looking forward to celebrating with him and his family at his party...it's going to be Dr. Seuss themed so you know it's going to be great! Here are some of my favorite pictures from our afternoon together....

I love this girl. Seriously, she rocks. Her one and only downfall is that she lives an hour away. I don't like that part one bit... she's totally worth the drive though! Angie has 2 crazy and fun little {twin} boys and will be welcoming a daughter into the world next month! I am so excited to get to join her and her husband in the operating room as this will be my very first c-section, so stay tuned for birth pictures!

Happy {birth} day Jacob Michael:: Tacoma Area Birth Photographer

My most recent birth was for my friend Heather, she is a nurse at the very hospital she delivered in, St. Josephs Medical Center in Tacoma! I got a text pretty early on the morning of November 2nd, she told me she was at the hospital and was starting to dilate. I asked her if she wanted me to come in and we decided we'll wait just a little longer for another centimeter or 2 to pass...I put myself on alert and started to get ready. I got another text from her just a little bit later telling me she was a little further a long and to start packing up my stuff. I got the kids ready and dropped them off on the way out, and then the text came...she was ready to push! I started freaking out thinking I was going to miss my first birth. I couldn't let that happen! I kept thinking I should have left when I first got the text, but we both had no idea how quickly things were going to happen! Her husband and I remained in close contact throughout my adventure into Tacoma. Heather really didn't want me missing this big event and neither did I! She was doing a great job keeping the baby inside! Thankfully, all of this happened when there wasn't much traffic out, so I was able to make great timing! When I got to the hospital, I felt like I was filming a scene from a movie... ya know the scene where a father-to-be is about to miss the birth of his first born? Yup, that's what I felt like! I was rushing through the hallways with all my equipment trying not to get lost! People were looking at me as if there was something wrong! I I quickly bolted into the next elevator and ran right into the nurses station! They all recognized me by my bags and said "You must be the photographer!" I smiled and said "Yup, that's me!" ...the nurse said "Well then, let's go have a baby!" They were awesome for letting Heather wait to push until I got there..I'm so thankful for them! I followed her into Heathers room where everyone was hanging out...we were all relieved I was able to make it in time, and then our gears quickly shifted into pushing mode! I cant believe how well she pushed, she was a natural, nice and strong every. single. contraction! Pushing took a little longer than expected but Heather never gave up...

At 11:16am on November 2nd, Jacob Michael entered the world weighing in at 7lbs and 15oz! This little peanut stole my heart right away! I'm not sure if it's because he and my son share the same name, or because he was just so darn cute...never the less, he is sure to be surrounded by lots of love (and kisses!)

Happy {birth} day Ayden James:: Tacoma Area Birth Photographer

Just 5 short days after my last birth in September, I was called in to do it again! Like I said in the previous post, this birth also reunited me with long lost classmates! Shannon and Andrew were going to soon be welcoming their 2nd child into the world, and for the first time, I was going to be at a birth center! The Birthing Inn (Tacoma, WA) was amazing..not only did the surroundings feel like I was at home, but it was also very well suited for a mom in labor... it had all the comforts you'd need including a plush bed, large jacuzzi tub and relaxing music... I'd have to say it was the best of both worlds!
It was different than the typical hospital set up I'm used to seeing. I was intrigued!

Shannon was doing great when I arrived around 11pm, she had a great group of friends and family helping her along, besides the contractions every few minutes, you would never be able to tell this girl was working hard to get this baby out, you might think the atmosphere for this kind of setting would be intense and calm, nope, not in this room! Laughing and jokes filled the hallways of this birth center! It really helped pass the time :) Things were pretty consistent throughout the night until around 2am, when things really started moving! The original plan was to get mom into the tub to labor that way for a bit, but things quickly changed and Shannon was on the bed pushing this baby out! At 3:05am Ayden James entered the world weighing 9lbs 12oz! He stole my heart right from the beginning! It's a good thing he's got a big sister who will be looking out for him, because this little guy has "adorable" written all over him!

Birth #11 was a success...thank you Shannon and Andrew for inviting me in on this very special day!

Happy {birth} day Maddox Robert::: Tacoma Area Birth Photographer

Not only did last September bring me 2 births, but ironically both of them were for former high school classmates! These awesome soon-to-be parents were no strangers to me, I used to play basketball with Christina, and Justin and I had a lot of the same classes throughout high school! It was so cool to get the email from Christina asking me to take birth pictures for her because that meant her and her high school sweetheart were going to soon be parents, I was so happy for her! This birth, my 10th, took me to St. Josephs Hospital over in Tacoma, I had not photographed a birth here yet, but I was super excited (duh!) I got the call on the night of the 14th and headed on in, from the sounds of it, things were progressing quickly... I was thankful I wasn't far away! Even though I've yet to miss a birth, I still get a little nervous when things go faster than "average" ...especially for first time moms!

I went up to the top floor where I was welcomed by a bunch of very excited family members! Everyone was in great spirits including the mom-to-be! From the looks of it, the baby was going to be arriving soon. I was right. It was just a few short hours and a couple pushes later that Maddox Robert was born, at 4:11am to be exact, weighing in at 6lbs 3oz! This couple sure does make cute babies!! I think they should go for 1,2..possibly 10 more kids (kidding!)

My "job " definitely has some perks..like getting to snuggle adorable 6lb babies...it's really not helping my baby fever one bit, but that's exactly what I got to do yesterday! I didn't want to leave, I really think I could have held him all. day. long.

Jagger joined this family (and one proud big brother} nearly 2 weeks ago, he must have been really eager to get out and play because he decided to show up 3 weeks early!

I was hopeful that we might get some sleeping pictures, but that wasn't the case! Jagger didn't want to miss any part of his on camera debut, so he decided to stay awake the entire time! That's perfectly fine though, candids are just as cute anyway!

I'm hopeful he slept really good for mom and dad the rest of the afternoon!

Thanks Tiffany and Corey for letting me cuddle with your precious baby boy yesterday, and for a really fun morning! You guys are great! Here are just a couple of my favorites from the day...

Happy {birth} day Brendan James:: Kirkland Area Birth Photographer

My 8th birth took me to the beautiful city of Kirkland, home of Evergreen Hospital! This was another new hospital for me, and a very nice facility if I may say so! It's been my personal favorite so far. If I wasn't an hour away, I'd seriously consider delivering there the next time around!

I also met Misha and her awesome husband on the local "mom" board I am a part of! I was so excited (as always) when I found out I was going get to help welcome their son into the world! Also joining me, was one of the best doulas ever, if you are in need of a doula, I would really encourage you to meet Rebecca Shepherd of "Sacred Sprout Doula Services"...she's awesome, seriously.

I got the call that Misha's water had broke around 6pm on Friday the 20th (while I was second shooting a wedding in Seattle, I might add!) After I was finished at the wedding, I decided to run home, grab some things and head up to Kirkland! We weren't sure how far dilated Misha was, and the plan was not to check until that morning, so we all had a little sleepover up at the hospital! Once 11am rolled around and Misha had been laboring hard all night long, it was quite a blow when the doctor told her she was still at a 1...I felt so bad for this new mom to be, keep in mind, she was laboring with no drugs.

As time passed, the contractions got even more intense, but still...there was not a ton of progress, it was then that we decided that I'd head home for a bit and stay in close touch with the doula until things started really moving along.

It wasn't until around 11pm that evening that I got the call to head back up to the hospital. I was then informed that Misha was headed back to the operating room for a c-section. I was relieved that Misha was finally going to be able to get some rest and meet this sweet boy we had all been anxiously waiting for! At 12:44 am Brendan James entered the world weighing 7lbs 4oz! Misha was a true rock-star throughout the entire experience...to this day, I am still inspired by her drive, determination, and hard work she displayed throughout a physically and emotionally exhausting weekend! I think she's pretty happy with the end result, even if it wasn't quite the outcome she had expected! Can you blame her? Look how cute this little guy is!!

Happy {birth} day Hayden Catherine:: Renton Area Birth Photographer

I met this mama-to-be on a local message board I am a part of.. I have met some very cool people on there, and Jennifer was no exception! I have photographed this darling family a few times now, and they are very special to me! When I was doing Jennifer's maternity pictures, she asked if I'd do birth pictures too and of course I said "Yes!" What was a little different about this birth, was that it was going to be a planned c-section, which was going to make my job a bit easier.. for once, I was able to plan for it, which, you can imagine, is rare when doing birth photography! I woke up early, headed to the hospital, hung out with mom and dad for a bit, took some pictures, and anxiously waited for the sound of the double doors to open! As soon as I saw Jeramy, I knew she was here! Hayden Catherine was born April 27th at 8:21am weighing 8lbs and 14oz...and as beautiful as ever, just like her big sister Jillian!
We all followed Jennifer to her new room and that's where we officially met the new addition to this family!

Happy {birth} day Hayden Laraway:: Bellevue Area Birth Photographer

If you remember my last post where we met Hudson, then you'll remember his mommy, Suzie! Suzie is how I met this mom-to-be! I was introduced to Joy about a year before she found out she was pregnant! I was so excited to be headed up north to Overlake hospital for this birth...up until then, I'd only been to Puyallup so it was going to finally be a change of scenery!
Suzie and Joy are really good friends, so when they both announced their pregnancies, I kept thinking how cool it was, that their little boys were going to grow up together! I've always thought how fun it would be to be pregnant with a close friend!

As soon as I found out I was going to photograph both of these births, I'll admit, I got a little nervous these little guys were going to arrive at the same time! Thankfully, once Suzie had her baby, I knew I was in the clear! I got the call on the 22nd of March, dropped the kids off with the sitter and off I went...in rush hour...to Bellevue...I was a little nervous traffic was going to be an issue but as it turned out, I had plenty of time :)

When I got there Joy was hard at work, she was laboring hard with her husband Dan, who was being a great coach! Time passed and while there wasn't a ton of progress, the contraction were in full force. Joy finally opted to get an epidural and once that happened, things started to really progress! Unfortunately, Joy experienced a ton of back labor that wasn't relieved with the medicine. I felt so bad for her, I couldn't imagine how tired she was...she was working so hard to try and push this baby out...by 11:30pm she was a 9.5 cms, the only problem was that this baby thought he was supposed to come out ear first and he wasn't budging at all. For 3 hours the nurses were trying to move him and once that was successful, it was 2am and we were all told to rest for one hour. Joy pushed throughout the night with so much strength, I dont know how she did it! Finally at 6:47, Hayden Laraway was born weighing, 8lns 14oz! I couldn't get over the amount of hair he had! ...as soon as he was born, a bunch of Doctors and nurses came rushing into the room and started performing CPR, it was really scary! Apparently, Hayden came out stunned and his heart rate dropped in half. He was blue and not breathing. There were so many people in the room because they had called a code and everyone was responding. Then came the sound everyone was waiting for...a cry! Once he cried, I cried. Watching CPR being done on a newborn, is horrible...I don't wish it on anyone. Once he was taken to the NICU, Joy and Dan were reassured Hayden was just fine and they were just going to be monitoring him! Thankfully, he was reunited with mom and dad within an hour!

Not only was this my 3rd birth, but it was also the most eventful! Thank you so much to Joy and Dan for allowing me to capture the birth of Hayden!

Happy {birth} day Hudson Andrew:: Puyallup Area Birth Photographer

It's really hard to explain the excitement I felt for this upcoming birth! Suzie is one of my best friends and this pregnancy was a long time coming! I was beyond thrilled for her when she told me they were pregnant (which happened to be the day before my daughters 1st birthday) a day that day will stick with me for a very long time! This amazing couple had to wait a little longer than most to get pregnant, but thanks to a lot of prayer from friends and family, this precious baby would be finally be joining the family in March of 2010!

I got the call around 11pm on March 14th that things were starting to progress and to be on alert! At the time, I was watching a movie with my husband and after the call came, I could not concentrate at all...I felt like a kid on Christmas Eve! I couldn't wait to be with my friend as she welcomed her baby into the world! I headed to the hospital around 1am and things were pretty intense. Not only was this just the 2nd birth I'd ever photographed, but this rock-star of a mama, was doing it au natural! I walked in just after a contraction and immediately knew, the atmosphere was going to be much more intense than anything I'd ever experienced. Thankfully Suzie's body adjusted very well to labor and it wasn't just a few hours later, she was going to be pushing! At 5:01am Hudson Andrew was born weighing 6lbs 4oz...he seemed so little at the time, I remember how much he looked a like a little doll, he was just adorable! Suzie had done an amazing job and was now a Mommy! I was so excited for her to get home so we could have play-dates, share "mommy" stories, and celebrate all this milestones that were going to be soon approaching together!

We are looking forward to celebrating with Hudson at his upcoming 1st birthday! Stay tuned for pictures :)

Happy {birth} day Gidian Robert:: Puyallup Area Birth Photographer

March 5th was a very special day for me, as it was the day I got to photograph my first birth. My good friend Sheena had contacted me a few months prior asking me if it might be something I'd be interested in doing and of course, I jumped at opportunity! Not only was this this first birth I attended, but it was also the shortest birth as well! Time seemed to pass quickly as the epidural did it's thing and we laughed and joked around with each other, I kept forgetting that Sheena was in labor...before we knew it, it was time to push! Ready. Set. Go. it was my big moment, I kept thinking about how excited/nervous I was and I had to just focus.

At 6:41pm, Gidian Robert was born weighing in at 9lbs. 1oz! As much as I wanted to cry from happiness, I knew I had a job to do, which was probably the hardest part. From then on, I followed this sweet baby around the room for his first bath, first shots, first diaper change and more! What an amazing opportunity it was, that I get to see these babies entire first hour of birth, I am so very blessed to be able to do what I do!

Gidian (Ian) was joined by one very proud big sister (Alyvia) she didn't waste any time getting out her brand new camera and assisting me in taking pictures!

Thank you Sheena and Matt for opening the doors to me and allowing me to discover this new found love of "Birth Photography" ...what an honor!

Happy {birth} day Elynn Zoey:: Puyallup Area Birth Photographer

Back in December of 2009, my friends and I went out to celebrate my birthday at a local bowling alley, while there, my good friend Heather and I got on the subject of having people in the delivery room... since she'd never seen a birth besides her own, I told her she could come to our next birth and then she said I could also come to her next birth..it was a deal! (This was before I had even thought about photographing births.. ahh the irony!) What neither of us knew, was that she was already pregnant and I was going to join her that upcoming August for the birth of their 3rd baby!

As her due date approached, we were all eager to get her in labor...Mom and Dad had decided to keep the sex of the baby a secret, so we were anxious to see what this baby was! One night in particular, she was sent home from the hospital after a failed induction, so she came over and we went walking around my neighborhood in hopes to send her right back to the hospital, but nothing happened. It wasn't until 2 days later, I received the call...at 5am!

Since this was the 3rd baby, I thought things might be progress quickly so I high tailed it to the hospital which was 15 minutes away, by the time I got there, she was already pushing! Thankfully, there was still time before the main event! Miss Elynn Zoey was born August 5th at 6:45am weighing 8lbs 7oz, with a head full of hair! She joined 2 very proud big sisters who were anxiously awaiting her arrival at a friends house!

I dont know why, but I let her talk me into not taking any pictures of her at the hospital...I told her if she has any more babies, I'm going to ignore her and do it anyway!! This mama is beautiful pregnant or not!

Happy {birth} day Violet Noel:: Bellevue Birth Photographer

It is so special to be asked to photograph a birth, especially when it's from someone you've never met! This was the case when Kellie and Sean invited me into the room with them last August as their precious little girl was born! These are two of the nicest people you will ever meet, seriously. It's so fun looking back on these pictures and reliving it like it was yesterday...Kellie, you did an amazing job!

Happy {birth} day Eva May:: Auburn Birth Photographer

Back in July, I was able to join the C family in the birth of their daughter Eva May. She joins 2 (very proud) big brothers who were so eager to teach her everything about life! They both did great during the delivery, the oldest son decided it was a little much (understandably) and kept his distance, but the youngest was so interested in what was going on, I was surprised he did so well! His main concern was that his Mommy was ok. I tried to explain what was happening so he would know that everything was normal. It was fun experiencing birth through the eyes of a 5 year old!

As soon as she came out (2 weeks early, if I may add), the Doctor knew instantly she was going to weigh over 10lbs, and he was right. She weighed 10lbs and 4oz and measured 23.5" long, making Eva my largest baby to date!

Thank you C family for inviting me into the delivery room on such a special day!

I'm Back!!

One of my goals for 2011 is to be a better blogger, I got so dependent on the simplicity of Facebook, that I let my blog go...
Well, not anymore! I'm back with a redesigned look (thanks to the fabulous Stacy Jacobsen) and am ready to begin!

My passion is in birth photography so you'll first be introduced to all the families I was privileged to meet in 2010 and the beautiful babies I was able to watch come into the world!

From there, I will post new sessions from 2011 along with all the other births I will get to do this year!

...I can't wait!
